Hello from Wachapreague!

2021 is (FINALLY!) here and we are excited to be able to hold the 30th Annual Flounder Tournament started by the Lewis family
back in 1970.
It was not an easy decision to cancel last year’s event, but we still feel it was the right one. Looking back, so much has changed for all of us, but one thing remains- a passion for fishing! It is with this passion we have decided to push onward and host this year’s tournament- albeit with a couple of adjustments we ask you to be considerate of in your daily happenings at the tournament.
We would ask that you please maintain 6 feet of distance between groups of people when entering either the Island House or the tackle shop, especially opening morning when so many of you check in. We will have visitors from multiple states, which isn’t any different than any other day at the restaurant, but we have a strict mask and 6 foot distance policy that has served us very well at the restaurant over the past year in keeping both customers and staff safe. Also, in Virginia we are not allowed to stand at the bar so please be mindful of that. Finally, we will not be able to host entertainment in the bar this year for obvious reasons, but we will have steel drums playing on our deck Sunday April 23rd, weather permitting. Enough on that- the real fun is on the water!
If you registered last year and asked us to carry your registration forward, we ask that you still fill out this years’ registration form and
check the box “I carried last years’ fee forward” on your registration form. Then please follow up with Debbie at captainzeds@verizon. net to verify she received your new registration and have your information from last year. Many thanks to those who, during uncertain times rolled their registration fees forward to this year!
As always, we are looking for ways to make the tournament even better than the year before. We are very excited to be celebrating the 30th Annual tournament! As such, we are upping the top prize to $3000!
This year we will again be offering a $500 “Junior Angler” prize for the heaviest fish caught by a participant 12 and under. So if you know of any kids you can get into the sport of fishing we would love to see them come out for the tournament! In addition, we will be awarding a $500 prize to the heaviest fish caught by a female participant. Furthermore, if you are a resident of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, we will be awarding a “Locals” award of a $150 Island House Restaurant gift card to the heaviest fish caught by a local. Of course, if any of the winners in these sub-categories also catches the heaviest overall fish for the tournament, then it simply sweetens the tournament for them. Our goal is to reach out to and promote fishing to as many potential anglers as possible while also reaching out to the next generation of anglers.
If you have three generations of anglers participating in the tournament and come into the restaurant to eat, we would like to extend a 15% discount to your family each and every time you dine with us during the tournament.
We will also be doing our cookout in the parking lot the first Saturday of the tournament again this year. In the event of weather or an off-premise event prohibiting us from doing the cookout on the first Saturday, then we will try to let everyone know when they pick up their shirts. The cookout is free for entrants and $10 for non-participants. Wristbands for the cookout will be handed out to tournament participants when you come get your t-shirt.
All of us at The Island House Restaurant and Trident Tackle in Wachapreague appreciate EVERYONE who makes our annual flounder tournament a priority for them each year, and we look forward to seeing you on April 23rd!
